Let's talk SMB protocol and failovers - what is your approach?

So, NetApp documenting really well what happening on the protocol level (http://www.netapp.com/us/media/tr-4100.pdf). and i assume doing large scale test for multiple software while knowing that "it shoulden't work" is not something anyone will invest time in...
