Unable to change file owner on CIFS share in OnTAP 9 SVM

$

We're currently (finally...) making a switch from EMC to NetApp, and our brand new Boxes are running on ONTAP 9 Smiley Happy

but we have a weird problem, currently blocking our cifs migration...

when using a cifs share on a svm hosted on one of our new FAS 2554 (which were delivered with ontap 8.3 and upgraded to 9 before any configuration) we cannot set the owner of a file or folder to any other user.

I can surely TAKE ownership of a file with my admin account, but I cannot set owner to some other user account... something we require for the migration of our terminal server profiles.

oddly enough, when creating a cifs svm and shares on our - also new - AFF 8040, which was delivered preinstalled with ontap 9, everything works fine.

our netapp consultant also was kind of clueless about that and couldn't reproduce this issue in his testlab, so we opened a case.

but maybe someone of the community knows what's going on Smiley Happy

either way, I'll post the solution once the case is closed.

as for the exact error message that occurs when trying to set file/folder owner on a FAS 2554 cifs share:

The security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object

Is Netapp Ontap Api asynchronous?

Hi there,

Is the Netapp Ontap Api is asynchronous?

When client send HTTP request to server to create Netapp resource, will Netapp cluster wait for successfully creating requested resource or just send back to client successful response to indicate that  request  is accepted but resource is necessarily created.

Thanks,

Anti virus server integration with Different V servers with different Ipspaces

Hi,

We had quite different problem in my enivornment, We running with 8.3 CDOT and we are having 20 Vservers and all are sitting in 20 differnt  domains

Now the question, How can we integrate the common Anti virus servers for all 20 Vservers?

1. All My vservers are different Vlans

2. All MY vservers are different Domains

As per the solution from netapp, We need to open the domain level trust between managemnt network and data network but my security team wont allow to go with this,

My qusetion is:

a)  Without domain trust relation ship how can we provide the solution?

b) As per my understnading, If we enable the routing between AV server and Storage Vservers, How can we integrate the common AV server priviliged user into 20 vservers.

Please share your ideas?

vFiler - Multiple Networks - same VLAN

I was wondering if I can have some advice about our exisiting vFiler configurations.

We have the following IFGRP

ifgrp create lacp IFGRP0 -b ip e0a e0b e0c e0d

This is then set to trunk our management and iSCSI connections

vlan create IFGRP0 123 456

We then have vFiler's each with 2 ipaddresses from a single VLAN. For exmaple, vf_TEST has 192.168.0.1 & 192.168.0.2. When this is mapped to VMware, it can see 2 paths to the LUN.

My question is, what benefit is there for having to paths comming from the same network aggreagate? A former colleague suggested this was the correct setup, however I cant see the benefit.

Hi All,

we have 6 nodes cluster with OS version 8.2.3P2 cluster mode at our Prod and DR DC's, our remote site's has flexpod concept with 2 nodes of OS version 8.3. Currently we are planning to upgrade the OS version to 9.0

Please suggest and help how to upgrade from 8.2.3P2 to 9.0 and request to provide detail steps of the upgrade process with pre and post checks for this upgrade.

Also let us know do we have any compatibility issues or bugs on 9.0 version? We are using Hitachi storage array's in our cluster mode setup.

7-mode unable to remove snapvault relationship

I have two relationships that I have been working on for about 3 weeks that will not go away. I believe my only error was not issuing a snapvault release on them before issuing the snapvault stop. The destination volume is gone and most all of the snapshots from the source (within the last two weeks) are also gone. All exhibit the same symptom. What is making this relationship hold on?

Hello,

SCOM (System Center Operations manager) tool is not able to view the alerts for the Clustered ONTAP 8.3. It is working fine for 7 mode filers.

Any suggested document to troubleshoot the SCOM monitoring issue for Clustered ONTAP.

Are Snapmirror Destinations always thick?

$

Hi,

i created a thin 3 TB volume on Snapmirror Source. There is no data in this volume so "aggr show" did not show decreasing available space.

Then I replicated this volume to Snapmirror Destination Filer (both cDot 8.3.1p1). Available aggr space on destination filer decreased there about 3 TB. "volume show-footprint" shows 3 TB at parameter "Volume guarantee". If I increase the volmes size at source filer this parameter automatically increases too and aggregates space is decreasing.

Is this normal? Are Snapmirror Destination Volumes always thick or can i make them thin somehow?

Unable to Install DSM on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Core

I'm doing a fresh install of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Core in a UCS environment on a B230-M2.  The OS is installed and networking is complete.  Windows MPIO is installed and enabled.  I've downloaded ONTAP DSM 4.1P1 (ntap_win_mpio_4.1p1_setup_x64.msi) but am immediately presented with "No Powershell Installation was found.  Data ONTAP DSM for Windows MPIO requires powershell v2.0 or later.  Please download powershell and retry the installation." when attempting to install it.  This OS is running Powershell 4 natively, so I'm not sure how to proceed.  What do I need to do to get the install routine to recognize the presence of powershell?  Or is there something else at play here?  Thanks...

OnCommand Clustered Data ONTAP 4.1.1.7474 SCOM Internal Connectors

Hi. We recently installed OnCommand Clustered Data ONTAP 4.1.1.7474 management pack into our SCOM and it really slowed our Ops Console. Right click on any alert freeze it for approx. 20 sec every time.

I believe it is because this MP created over 400 internal connectors (Administration - Product Connectors - Internal Connectors) which look like this.

340 of them:

OC.Cluster.OM.ClassType.Connector.0065426f-9a81-4176-96d3-ee1c7a2edfacClustered Data ONTAP MP uses this connector to save discovered cluster storage components to SCOM database

65 of them:

OC.Cluster.OM.Connector.fd30feca-0613-11e6-b3ef-00a098a0623fClustered Data ONTAP MP uses this connector to save discovered storage virtual machine objects to SCOM database

Additionaly those:

DataONTAP.Cluster.ClusterVserverSCOMConnectorClustered Data ONTAP MP uses this connector to save ClusterVserverSCOMConnectors data.
DataONTAP.Cluster.DashboardConnectorClustered Data ONTAP MP uses this connector to save dashboard data to SCOM database.
DataONTAP.Cluster.MgmtServerDiscoveryConnectorClustered Data ONTAP MP uses this connector to save discovered management servers to SCOM database.
DataONTAP.Cluster.StorageDiscoveryConnectorClustered Data ONTAP MP uses this connector to save discovered cluster storage to SCOM database.

Anyone of you noticed something similiar and if it so, would it be okay to remove those connectors ?

We have also different NetApp which we monitor with OnCommand Data ONTAP 4.1.1.7300 and there we have only 5 connectors established.

How do I know which cluster node is hosting a CIFS Server?

$

Hello,

During the last few Data OnTAP upgrades on cdot, I've noticed that givebacks get vetoed because a CIFS Server is in use. I had stopped CIFS on the CIFS Servers I thought were hosted on the node I was upgrading, but apparently I was incorrect because the one that vetoed the giveback wasn't in my list.

I had assumed you could determine which nodes hosted which CIFS connections by which node currently hosted the LIF for a CIFS Server, but that appears to be incorrect. Does anyone know how to definitively know which cluster node is hosting a CIFS Server, so I'll know which ones to disable during an upgrade?

SNAPSHOT creation problem

We're having a problem with one of our NetApp volumes: it's no longer creating any snapshots. It usedto work.

SnapMirror for the volume is working properly.

Our Senior Storage Admin left us a few weeks ago, and my manager and I are absolute novices where DataOnTap is concerned. We haven't found IBM to be that helpful, so far, so we figured we'd give this forum a try.

This is the description of the problem my manager gave to IBM:

**************************************************************************

System type: Netapp FAS2200 NAS

Problem: PROCUREMENT Volume will not take daily/weekly snapshots, message saying "snapshot auto-delete or volume autosize still in progress"

attempted solution: The fs_size_fixed setting is currently set to "on" for this volume. It is part of a snapmirror relationship, and the snapmirror appears to be working. None of our other Snapmirror volumes have the fs_size_fixed setting set to "on", so I tried changing the fs_size_fixed setting to “off” for the PROCURMENT volume to try and get the snapshots working. So I enabled the setting, and had some weird behavior:

----------------------This is what the messages looked like before making the change.:----------------------------

NAS01> Wed Aug  3 17:28:46 EST [NAS01:wafl.snap.create.skip.reason:notice]                                               : PROCUREMENT: skipping creation of hourly snapshot (snapshot auto-delete or vol                                               ume autosize still in progress)

NAS01> Wed Aug  3 17:30:32 EST [NAS01:wafl.vol.autoSize.fail:info]: Unable to grow volume 'PROCUREMENT' to recover space: Volume has the fixed filesystem size option set.

----------- I then turned fs_fixed_size off. The volume started adding 10GB every 1 minute. ------------

Wed Aug  3 17:35:47 EST [NAS01:wafl.vol.autoSize.done:info]: Automatic increase size of volume 'PROCUREMENT' by 10485760 kbytes done.

Wed Aug  3 17:36:47 EST [NAS01:wafl.vol.autoSize.done:info]: Automatic increase size of volume 'PROCUREMENT' by 10485760 kbytes done.

Wed Aug  3 17:37:47 EST [NAS01:wafl.vol.autoSize.done:info]: Automatic increase size of volume 'PROCUREMENT' by 10485760 kbytes done.      vol staus -b

Wed Aug  3 17:38:17 EST [CRPNAS01:wafl.vol.autoSize.done:info]: Automatic increase size of volume 'PROCUREMENT' by 10485760 kbytes done.

----- i then had to go increase the DR Procurement volume on DRNAS01 by the same size manually, because the replication started failing. -----------

---i then turned fs_fixed_size for NAS01 PROCUREMENT back to on-----------

So I fail to understand what is going on here, this behavior is the opposite of what I expected.

Any suggestions you can give would be appreciated. We'll try to answer any question you have, but we may need to come back to you first and ask "How?"

Thanks in advance.

How do I move a volume to a different node

$

Hello

I have a volume that I created on one of our SVMs on our backup filer.  The volume is in the correct SVM and on the right aggregate but it is managed by node 1.  I need it to be managed by node2.  How do I change the managing node?

The reason is we are running NetBackup 7.6.0.3 and we are using node based backups/restores instead of cluster aware backups due to limitations in 7.6.0.3.

Thanks

vscan connection-status after a giveback

$

Hi all...

I have a annoynig status display for "vserver vscan connection-status show-not-connected" command.

Past July 07/21 we have made a takeover - giveback operation from NODEFAS01_N1 to NODEFAS01_N2 because we need to change a dimm module on NODEFAS01_N1.

Takeover and giveback works fine, but from the moment of the giveback operation, "vscan connection-status" show disconnected  lifs for the antivirus lifs that were migrated to the NODEFAS01_N2  from NODEFAS01_N1 node.

These lifs are in its home port correctly after giveback operation.

Lets see if I can explain with cdot commands...

Status ok  for vscan service on NODEFASCL

We have three vservers, vserver_A1, vserver_E1 and vserver_O1

Each vserver has four vscan connections to four vscan servers.

These vserver has his home node on NODEFA01_N1:

NODEFASCL::*> vserver vscan connection-status show-connected -fields connected-since

node         vserver server        connected-since
------------ ------- ------------- ------------------
NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_A1 172.18.16.16 8/14/2016 11:10:25
NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_A1 172.18.16.23 8/14/2016 11:10:41
NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_A1 172.18.16.30 8/14/2016 11:10:30
NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_A1 172.18.16.31 8/14/2016 11:10:30

NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_E1 172.18.16.16 7/21/2016 22:02:32
NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_E1 172.18.16.23 7/23/2016 05:35:10

NODEFAS01_N1 vserver_O1 172.18.16.31 7/23/2016 05:35:02

But after giveback, "vscan connection-status show-not-connected" command shows no-data-lif connection errors for this vservers but on the other node NODEFAS01_N2,  this node received lifs config after takeover from NODEFAS01_N1 and now these lifs no longer exists on NODEFAS01_N2 after giveback TO NODEFAS01_N1

Diskcount for New Sync Mirror Aggregate

We have 48 spare drives spanning two DS4246 shelves (fully populated with 24 x 6TB SATA each) connected to a FAS8080 running cDOT 8.3 and wanted to create a new, Sync Mirrored aggregate of 44 drives across both shelves.  Would the diskcount value in the command below need to be 22 or 44?  We want this aggregate to have two plexes: one of 22 drives on one shelf, and 22 drives on the other shelf.

node-01> storage aggregate create -aggregate aggr2_01 -node node-01 -diskcount ? -mirror true

An appropriate way to add extra capacity into an existing aggregate?

$

I need to add 2x24 SAS shelve into an existing aggregate, and it's current layout as shown in the attachment.

I am going to create two more raid groups with the same size of 22 disks as rg4 and rg5 in the same aggr. However, my questions is, should I also need to use extra 2 disks into rg3 to make it up as full raid group? would that cause hot spot on these two disks? ontap 8.3.2 cdot.

Thank you!

"cifs setup" fails with "Setup cannot connect to an LDAP server for the FQDN"

Hi,

I tried to add 8.2.3 7-Mode filer to Windows AD via "cifs setup"
wizard, but it's failing with:

CIFS - Logged in as username@MYDOMAIN.COM
*** Setup cannot connect to an LDAP server for the MYDOMAIN.COM
*** active directory domain, and so cannot continue.

I think the error message is misleading as the filer can talk to LDAP
servers (I have multiple domain controllers) and I have a tcpdump that
confirms it. From what I could get from the tcpdump, the filer does the following:

0. Sends DNS request "SRV _ldap._tcp.MYDOMAIN.COM"

// + some more DNS requests for "SRV _kerberos" etc.

1 Sends LDAP search query that looks like this:

Filter: (&(&(DnsDomain=MYDOMAIN.COM)(Host=FILER-NAME))(NtVer=0x00000006))

Does it try to find itself ?

2. Gets am empty (but successful) response, where "matchedDN" is empty.

3. Sends "abondonRequest" to LDAP server.

4. Sends "unbindRequest to LDAP server.

The filer repeats it for all LDAP server it fetched at step 0. and quits with the error message above.

I found the following KBs:

https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=2026294&actp=LIST
https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=2018207&actp=LIST

All my LDAP servers have names that are less than 15 symbols, that's
verified. And NetBIOS is not active I was told.

Any ideas maybe?

Cheers,
Vladimir
