7MTT Cifs Migration Keeping IP and Identity

$

We are trying to migrate several cifs filers & vfilers to cmode and in our testing have come across some problems when trying to follow the transition guide.

Though not mentioned, you can't create a cifs server on the new SVM without a lif so you have to borrow a temp IP and create a temp lif. Then you can create a cifs server with a temp identity.

If you follow the ONTAP 8 procedure, the guide doesn't mention how to reconfigure the cifs server on the 7mode system without terminating cifs then re-running cifs setup which is disruptive to clients.

We tried to follow the procedure for ONTAP 9.0 or later and failed to successfully run the vserver cifs modify command to change the cifs netbios name to the 'real' name. The error we got indicated our AD domain id didn't have rights to rename the  cifs identity but it can add and remove entries.

::> vserver cifs modify -vserver testsvm -cifs-server testsvm

In order to create an Active Directory machine account for the CIFS server, you must supply the name and password of a Windows account with sufficient privileges to add
computers to the "CN=Computers" container within the "xxxxxxx" domain.
Enter the user name: xxxxxxx
Enter the password:xxxxxxxxxx

Error: Machine account creation procedure failed
[ 721] Loaded the preliminary configuration.
[ 822] Successfully connected to ip aa.bb.cc.dd, port 88 using TCP
[ 1031] Successfully connected to ip aa.bb.cc.dd, port 389 using TCP
**[ 1140] FAILURE: Could not rename existing account
** 'CN=testsvmtempid,CN=Computers,DC=xxx,DC=xxxxx,DC=com'
** to 'cn= testsvm,CN=Computers,dc=XXX,dc=XXXXX,dc=COM':
** Insufficient access
Error: command failed: Failed to create the Active Directory machine account "TESTSVM". Reason: LDAP Error: The user has insufficient access rights.

Our domain admins weren't aware of any permissions that could be applied to our ID to allow the modify to run. We ended-up having the domain admin remove the old and temporary vfiler/SVM entries in the domain, deleting the SVM's cifs configuration then recreating it with the 'real' identity. This resulted in losing the cifs shares from the SVM so they had to be recreated by hand.

What permissions do we need to be able to run the vserver cifs modify so the migrations can be done with minimal disruption? Due to security concerns, we would not be allowed to use a domain admin account so we're looking to understand what the minimum set of permissions would be.

Commit a file to WORM via api

Hello,
in our clusters we actually do commit to WORM state changing attributes via NFS. I think this is the preferred way and the guide "Ontap 9 archive and compliance using snaplock technology power guide" confirm my thoughts.

This KB shows the same can be done via API

Do anyone of us have some experience using API? Are there any disavantages to consider (security, performance etc.)?

Thank you

What are the new features in ontap 9.5 and changes made in regards to syncronous mirroring?

NFS/CIFS Encryption

In terms of end to end encryption over NFS/CIFS, I know there can have NetApp Volume Encryption which will happen on volumes. What about encryptions from VM clients and to the NetApp storage?

In NFS Datastore cases, we are using v3, and not using Kerboros( I know Kerbors can support AES). We also use NFS/CIFS share. So, what kind of encryptions suppored here if any, and how can they work out?

Thanks!

how to switch ifgrp ports from 1Gb to 10Gb in 9.1 ?

Hi

Is there a recommended procedure to switch the ifgrp ports from 1Gb to 10Gb in ONTAP 9.1 ?

In the olden days of 7-mode it was a relatively simple procedure edit rc files and failover the nodes etc.

Not sure how to approach this in ONTAP 9.1.

The cluster nodes currently have multimode lacp ifgrp's with 2x1Gb ports each.    We are introducing 10Gb infrastructure at that site and want to switch the ifgrp's over to the 10Gb ports.

Thanks

using conditional execution in CLI

Is there a way to use conditional logic on the OnTap CLI between different fields? Like if I wanted to get all users that are over 1TB OR using more than 1million files? E.g. something like

quota report (-disk-used >1TB | -files-used >1000000)

Volume move failing with 'undergoing transition' error (EDIT: never mind, all good)

$

UPDATE: After some more investigation, I discovered that the volume was no longer needed, so I could just delete it. No need to resolve this problem anymore.

---

Mixed 4-node FAS8060/8200 cluster running CDOT 9.4P5. I'm in the process of moving all volumes from the 8060 pair's disk shelves to those on the 8200 pair, so that I can decommission the 8060. One volume remains, which is running out of a Fibre Channel SVM. But when I do "vol move start..." I get this response:

"Error: command failed: Cannot move volume [volume] in Vserver [SVM]. Reason: Moving a volume undergoing transition is not supported. Use "snapmirror show -type TDP" to get the status of the volume transition operation."

Running that snapmirror command results in:

"There are no entries matching your query."

Googling for that TDP type suggests that this something to do with transitioning from 7-Mode to CDOT, which is a process we went through several years ago on this system.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? That is, how to tell the system that this volume actually isn't "in transition" and can be moved?

Restoring a LUN from with a Volume for 8.2.5 7-Mode

Greetings,

Have only been here a couple of months and have run into an area that I am not sure about proceeding with.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I have four ESXI luns, that are within a single volume, that is being snapmirrored.  One of the ESXI's has gone bad and the VMware admin needs for me to re-establish one of the ESXI luns.

How can I go about restoring only the one lun from the volume that is being snapmirrored without writing over the other ther luns?

This is one of the areas that I pointed out that needed to be adjusted, but have not received approval yet.  Can someone please assist with the steps for this either via CLI or OnCommand.

Thanks in advance.

AutoSupport options...

Hi All

When using cluster mode. Is it possible to have AutoSupports sent to an internal Web server location as opposed to using a SMTP server..?

My AutoSupports cannot be sent direct to netapp as there is no external connectivity and SMTP is a blocked protocol on our network.

So getting a zipped package is difficult.

From the below link it looks like it can be sent out to an FTP site (which i assume could be internal)

https://kb.netapp.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/1033620/loc/en_US

However again FTP is an unsupported insecure protocol. SFTP would probably work for us however it does not state that is is supported.

At the moment I am having to copy each file out of an Autosupport created via the console from the SPI in to a folder on my local PC.

7MTT Snapmirror replication and network compression

Can't figure out how to get compression enabled on a snapmirror relationship established with 7MTT. Relationship is created fine using the tool. Non-compressed transfer works just fine. I've got many TB worth of data to move and I'd rather see it take a couple days vs weeks.

Policy has compression set to true on the CDOT cluster. Temp license for Snapmirror is installed on both source and target. I've restarted baseline copies and started them from scratch after the policy change. Verified the appropriate policy is applied to the relationship.

Source: 8.2.3P6

Target: 9.4P3

Any guidance much appreciated. I'm pretty new to CDOT.

Aggregate relocation or storage failover impact to hosts with MPIO

$

Hey there.

Under SAN configurations for HA pair, attempting to reduce the "loss of reduntancy" aspect while ontap software upgrades...

Was wondering if the below scenario make sense.

MPIO on hosts will determine the best 'active" path"  based on which node's aggregate the LUN is hosted...

if an aggregate relocation or SFO is issued, is the active path automatically change to use the partner path as optimesed path?

if so yes ,then i could upgrade the "vacated" node ,and then do the same extra step on the other node (by ARL or SFO) ,thus be able to manage the upgarde's impact on what the hosts are experiensing as far the optimesed paths ,or loss of  active paths ?

Total size of snapshots for all volumes in aggregates

I need to know how much space being taken by all snapshots for all volumes in one or each one of aggregates.

What commands or scripts can do that?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Install NetApp Host Utiliies for Windows 7.1 on Windows Server 2019

Hello!

According to the Interoperability Matrix Tool, NetApp Host Utiliies for Windows 7.1 is supported by Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2016.

I tried to install NetApp Host Utiliies 7.1 on Windows Server 2019 version 1809 build 17763.107.
During the installation, I get an error that updates KB2990170, KB3036614 are not installed and the installation of the program is interrupted. But these updates are intended for Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2. These updates do not applicable to Windows Server 2019.

Official NetApp Technical Support Response:

Actually in the error message is required a Hotfix from Microsoft, so you have to contact Microsoft support to request it.

About this error we can't apply any action plan because is not due to our system. ”

Does anyone have a real experience installing NetApp Host Utiliies for Windows 7.1 on Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2016?

Which build Windows Server  did you use?

Hi,

I have 3 nodes 2750 each with 2 controller. I have 2 netapp switch.

e0a from each controller is connected to Switch A 6 connections and e0b from each controller to Switch B. All connections are solid and on every controller e0a and e0b are populated with internal IP's.

on my first Node 1 controller 1 i created a cluster and Node 1 controller 2 joined without any issues.

Node 2  and 3 controllers  1 and 2  ran cluster setup and join and provided  { e0a IP  Node 1 controller 1 }  and they all failed and this is happening on all 4 controllers. I also tried to do it from GUI Guided setup and failed.

Error stated that node are not rechable, not able to ping.

From Node 2 and 3 from every controller i am able to ping clus1 and clus2 default interconnect lifs cluster  e0a and e0b and e0a and e0b.

Need some help what am i missing ??

Any help will be appreciated.

SnapMirror TDP too slow

Hi gurus,

I'm transferring a 6TB encrypted 7-mode volume to a C-Dot storage on AWS and transfer speed is about 2.4MB per minute.

Can the encryption impact this transfer? Is there any flag or option to increase this speed?

Any suggestion?

Thank you!

Hi All,

I'm trying to automate the ontap upgrade process and i need to trasnfer the epsilon node to another node. I know we can use Invoke-NcSsh and then use the normal ontap command but i want to achive it using PS cmdlet so that i can use the previous varibales. I tried Set-Ncnode but there is no option to trasnfer the epsilon. Any help is highly appricaited.

Here is my code.

#ClusterName

$Cluster=Read-Host"Enter the cluster name to connect"

#credentials to connect the cluster

$creds=Get-Credential-UserName"admin"-MessageNull

foreach ($itemin$Cluster) {

   Connect-NcController$item-Credential$creds}

$epsilonnode=Get-NcNode|where {$_.IsEpsilonNode -eq$true}

Write-Host"The Epsilon node is : $epsilonnode"

$nonepsilonnode= Get-NcNode|where {$_.IsEpsilonNode -eq$false}

$nonepsilonnode

Read-Host-Prompt"Press any key to continue"

$newepsilonnode=Read-Host-Prompt "Enter the node name to trasnfer the Epsilon :"
