Event Log - NOTICE token.vol.is.compressed

Can someone help explain what this event log entry means?

NOTICE        token.vol.is.compressed: A 'token create' request in volume CIFS_VOLUME failed because the volume is compressed.

Running OnTap 8.3.2p4 with a SVM with CIFS server.  Oracle 12c on Windows 2012 R2 is using this CIFS share to write backups to and write archive logs.  I'm troubleshooting the Oracle 12c issue and don't see any other errors on the FAS8040 besides this Severity Notice entry in the event log for that volume.

Update Of Drive Firmware - A Few Questions

$

I have been tasked with upgrading the drive firmware on a pair of FAS2240's running 8.2.3P3 7 Mode and I had a couple of questions.

1) The only access I have to move the firmware and the disk qualifier files to the FAS is via FTP. Do these need to be moved to the approrpiate directories in BIN or ASCII mode?

2) Wanted to confirm that I will need to run this firmware and the disk qualifier on both of the nodes in the pair. Is this correct?

Thank you in advance!

ONTAP 8.3GA

Hi,

If I take a snapshot of a volume and I see that snapshot's size changes every minute, is it safe to conclude there has been data changes in that volume since the snapshot was taken? I thought so but just want to make sure I don't miss anything.

Thanks,

Multiple SVM or Single SVM for Hyper-V

Hi,

I have a FAS2554 in cluster mode Data OnTap. By default, SystemSetup created 2 agregates :

- "sata_data_1" on my node 1 (9 TB)

- "sata_data_2" on my node 2 (9 TB)

I have 2 hyper-V clusters. I'm going to create 1 volume et 1 lun per cluster in ISCSI.

What are the best practices concerning SVM. Do I have to create 1 SVM or 2 SVM ?

Regards.

I Need to pass a volume from online to read-only. But I must continue to serve the data.

So the restrict option don't work.

Is there a way to do that ?

I am running a 8.2.4P5 version in 7-mode.

LIf failover Policies in Ontap 9.1

$

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can further explain the differences between the "system-defined" and the "Brodcast-domain-wide" Lif failover policies. I have reviewed this info, https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1636021/html/GUID-92CC5F58-5EB8-4E2D-88F0-FA2F740062E0.html, and i'm still uncertain about my use case for either of these.

We have DOT 9.1 clusters that have 2-3 HA pairs in each cluster. On top of that, each HA pair of said cluster is actually built into a smaller "availability domain" of compute and network resources.

In this environment, we do not desire LIFs to failover to other HA pairs unless absolutely needed. We want the LIFs to stay local to the HA pair if possible. We also have no "NEED" for rolling upgrades, though it is nice to have, if using brodcast-domain-wide failover policy will generally give us local HA pair LIF failover before failing over outside the HA pair, I'd rather dump system-defined policy with rolling upgrades.

Can anyone clear up for me how these two policies choose the next port to failover to, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Listing all connected clients to a volume?

ONTAP 9.1RC1

Hi,

This probably has been discussed many times but I am trying to get an authorative answer as to whether ONTA 9.x has a way to show which NFS clients are currently mounting to a particular volume. NetApp support just told me there is no way to do so but I am hoping it's not true so I turn to this community to see if anyone out there has a better idea. This should be something very doable and every enterprise storage solution should have it.

Thanks,

Ontap9 and ldap client configuration: Can MemberOf be used to query Unix groups?

$

Hi all,

a customer has his ldap servers setup in a way that unix groups show up as a MemberOf attribute of each user. Please find an example below. Is it possible to configure Ontap9 ldap client in a way to make use of this? The queries might be much faster than the conventional way of querying each group and see if the user is a member of it.

I've replaced some of the real values in the example by <description>

DATA MIGRATION FROM 7-MODE TO ENABLE cDOT RECONFIGURATION

$

Hi all,

I currently have a NetApp configured in 7-mode that needs reconfiguring from scratch as cDOT.  I'm fine with this process but.....what to do with the data !  It's been suggested to move all data (approx 15TB) onto temporary QNAP storage, reconfigure the NetApp, then copy back.

Has anyone been through anything similiar or have any other recommendations I how I can achieve this without losing data and still providing access to it throughout the NetApp upgrade.

Thanks in advance Smiley Happy

Lost Communication to Primary Filers

$

Greetings All,

Have a serious problem, and I will try to first give the facts:

FAS6240

Version 8.2.3 7-Mode

We lost communication with both primary filers yesterday.  It looks as if there is a authentication problem.  I am unable to log on with my elevated account, but I can log on with a local account.  If a customer reboots, they will lose connection.

Strange, I can access the DR filers with no issues...

I have rebooted the filers this morning, still unable to access the filers with elevated account via SecureCRT and NetApp OnCommand.

All protocols, CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, and FC/FCoE are enabled.

NOTE: In the CIFS windows, I have clicked on the Options TAB and went to Access Security.  The Enable SMB is NOT checked.

I am now receiving a email from the primary filers stating Configuration Error with the following link

https://kb.netapp.com/support/s/article/system-configuration-warning-reported-by-the-storage-system

We do not have NetApp support at this time due to a lapse in the contract.  We will finally get support in the next two weeks when they upgrade our systems.

So, does anyone have an idea what is wrong and how I can fix this?

AD to NETAPP Differences 8.2 to 9.1

$

Can someone  help me understand why my users are seeing a different behaviour with ONTAP 9 CIFS.  We moved them from 8.2 7-Mode to a shinny new FAS 8040 ONTAP 9.1.

The AD Domain server remained the same  2008 R2 and the ONTAP  SVM is joined to the domain as  usual.  All shares have default settings

nothing fancy.  The windows clients are joined to the domain as a computers.

On the Old 8.2 ONTAP  when they mapped a CIFS share from a client windows server all of these formats worked:

net use z: \\server\share /USER fred password

net use z: \\server\share /USER DOMAIN\fred password

net use z: \\server\share /USER fred@my.domain password

However with ONTAP 9 shares we see the following different behaviour:

net use z: \\server\share /USER fred password   OK

net use z: \\server\share /USER DOMAIN\fred password   FAIL

net use z: \\server\share /USER fred@domain password   FAIL

All fail with:

System errror 59 has occurred'

An unexpected network error occurred

I am guess the key is something potentially kerberos name related perhaps if the client is joined to the AD domain.   However thats a guess.

Any comments please.

Rgds Andy

Snapmirror reinilization went into idle state. Giving error

Hello,

We have very large volume which needs to be reinilization due to some issue. We have created a new scratch volume at destination and started reinilization. All went well since then but somehow after completing transfer of around 3tb of data replationship status went inot idle state and giveing error:

Transfer failed. (Replication operation request failed from Cluster Id: xxxx, Node Id: yyyy to Cluster Id: zzzz, Node Id: aaaaa due to a network error (CSM: An operation did not complete within the specified timeout window.))

My question here is : if I initilize the session again weather it starts from the state it went into idle state or from the scratch again.

Any solution please.
