Problem with 2 node stretched metrocluster and DR site

$

Hello,

we have a weird problem with a 2 node fabric attached stretch metrocluster and a DR site.

Our Ontap 9 metrocluster is peered with a disaster recovery (DR) cluster.
Checking metrocluster LIFs health in a 2-node stretch metrocluster returns a warning if data LIFs from 3rd peered cluster is unreachable. This could affect basic operation like switchover and switchback.

In order to separate environment we tried to:

use different vlan for the purpose of cluster peering (metrocluster and DR) in the same ipspace
use different vlan for the purpose of cluster peering (metrocluster and DR) in different ipspace at metrocluster side.

Since the DR site is not part of the metrocluster, I would expect the DR site data LIFs would not be checked when running metrocluster check run, but they show up instead. Furthermore, when communication with the DR site is interrupted, the metrocluster check command gives a warning about LIFs because DR cluster data LIFs are unreachable.

There is an internal bug opened for this problem

http://mysupport.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/bol?Type=Detail&Display=1088242

But I want to be sure we aren't doing any misconfiguration

Thank you

Remotely scheduling an NDMPCOPY

Hi there,

I need to tap into the deep experience pool. I have a need to remotley execute (from a windows server) an ndmpcopy of a volume from a CDOT 9.1 node, to a 7 mode node. The command runs fine from the CDOT cli, but I need it to be fired as part of a complex script that protects an email archive system. The last step after stopping services etc, would be to fire the ndmpcopy of the volume. I've had a go, but I'm falling well short as this is not my strongest point !

COuld anyone point me in the right direction please ?

Many thanks in advance.

cluster image package get failed from CDOT 9.1 to 9.2RC1

Hi,

I have been experienced  cluster image package get failed from CDOT 9.1 to 9.2RC1

Package download started.......................................... .................................................................. Package download failed.
Error: command failed: Package download failed due to a timeout.

somehow it failed and stopped downloading in backgroud, which not like 8.3RC1, it failed but still download in the backupgroup and after the files download completed you could still use
cluster image package get packagename and get it validate after this which i upgrade from 8.3RC1 to 9.1.

but in 9.1 no such options. cluster image package get command only works for URL.

Also somehow if you try system node image get -node nodename -package from the same URL, it has percentage showing.. and eventuyally it succesfful, from i can tell
- cluster image package get URL and system node image get -node nodename -package URL used the differnent time-out value and maybe different mechanism

This is from differnt domain and legacy network, 780MB+ not small.  so i am wondering is there any way to troubleshoot or change the  cluster image package get  default time out vaule ?

Cheers

ONTAP Recipes: Did you know you can…?

Easily provision storage by creating an aggregate

You can create an aggregate that consists of only HDDs or only SSDs by using System Manager if all disks are the same size.

1. Choose one of the following methods:

Click Applications & Classes > Storage Tiers.

Click Storage > Aggregates & Disks > Aggregates.

2. Click Create.

3. In the Create Aggregate dialog box, specify the name of the aggregate, the disk type, and the number of disks or partitions to include in the aggregate. The minimum hot spare rule is applied to the disk group that has the largest disk size.

4. Click Change. In the Change RAID Configuration dialog box, specify the RAID type and the RAID group size.

5. Click Save.

6. If you want to mirror the aggregate, select the Mirror this aggregate check box.

7. Click Create.

The aggregate is created with the specified configuration, and is added to the list of aggregates in the Aggregates window.

Dear All,

i have a urgent problem after a full AD domain crash we do not have ano longer access to data on CIFS shares of our vFilers

I created already local uses on netapp vilfer and added them to admiistrator group and set the rights on the share but still no access

I even removed the vfiler with cifs setup out of domain and set to wrokgroup but still no access

Any idea how i can quickly get access to data on share?

New Technical Report Released - TR-4557: NetApp FlexGroup Volumes Technical Overview

$

ONTAP 9.1 brought innovation in scale-out NAS file systems: NetApp FlexGroup.

With FlexGroup volumes, a storage administrator can easily provision a massive single namespace in a matter of seconds. FlexGroup volumes have virtually no capacity or file count constraints outside of the physical limits of hardware or the total volume limits of ONTAP. Limits are determined by the overall number of constituent member volumes that work in collaboration to dynamically balance load and space allocation evenly across all members. There is no required maintenance or management overhead with a FlexGroup volume. You simply create the FlexGroup volume and share it with your NAS clients. ONTAP does the rest.

Fractional reserve in Volumes without LUNs

$

Hello,

I'm a little bit confused.

I have some thin provisioned volumes without LUNs. They are published by NFS and CIFS.

We have provided the volumes with snapshot reserve 10% because we need snapshots.

We have no autodelete and no autosize enabled.

What is the difference in behaviour between fractional_reserve=0% and fractional_reserve=100% in these volumes?

Which value is recommended in these volumes?

Thanks,

Korinna

Failed to join AD Domain on Win2012 7-Mode

Hi!,

I'm having issues when trying to joing an AD Domain on Windows 2012, when I provide the account name and password on cifs setup, I'm receiving the following error:

"Could not authenticate with domain controller: No Kerberos keys for this account in Active Directory.
To recover, reset account password on DC, then either wait for or force
Active Directory synchronization."

We have tried several times and we still have the same issue.

I'm using a vfiler on a DoT Version of 8.1.4P4 7-Mode and my domain is a Windows 2012 Domain.

Did anyone have seen this error before?

Snap Vault files location question

$

HI,

We have a FAS2650 for production, the volumes has been setup to take snapshot for hourly, daily & weekly schedule. It will store the snapshots for a short period in case any fast recover need. The snapshot files will also use SnapVault to another FAS2554 for long term keeping. So I need to check and make sure in FAS2650 have enough space for snapshot files. And I just notice that on FAS2554, the vaulted snapshot files were also located in the Snapshot reserve area of the volume on FAS2554. Is this correct? Why not use the normal capacity of the destination volume? If this is true then I will have limit capacity for the vaulted Snapshot files since they are located in the reserve area. Can I use the whole volume capacity for the snapshot files?

Also when I try to enable storage efficiency on FAS2554 volume, I notice that it has warning say "Storage efficiency cannot be enabled for offline volumes and mirror destination volumes". Is it means that I can't enable this on my FAS2554 volume (this volumes were snapmirror destination volume under Snap Vault)?

SnapMirror Replication Failure Since Relocation

Hi all,

I have a strange issue. I have two sites, A and B, A replicates to B using DP relationships. Since shifting the kit at site B to a new datacentre I am having trouble with SM.

Both nodes in the switchless cluster have an uplink to the Nexus datacentre switch, using port e0c (Twinax). Node 01 seems to have a faulty cable, which will be replaced at a later date, so in the meantime I have admin shut the port on the node.

Cluster peer health shows partial connectivity to the source cluster, as you would expect. The trouble I have is the SM relationships will not update, the event log indicates it is due to the Intercluster LIF on node 01 is not up.

As I understand the replication should still flow through node 02.

Am I missing something here?

Cheers,

Dan

CIFS auditing in cluster mode

Hi All,

I have configured cifs auditing in clustered ontap and to view the audit events i opened the evtx file in Microsoft Management console. I am seeing a message like

The description for Event ID 4663 from source NetApp-Security-Auditing cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

The message says that the source NetApp-Security-Auditing cannot be found. Do we need to install any source type to view the events properly.

Node limitation for SAN and NAS in CDOT

$

Hi,

I'm working on netapp since long, but have never came across as to why the node limitation for SAN configuration in CDOT is 8 node and that of NAS configuration is 24 node.

I have just heard from many people that beyond 8 node netapp do not support SAN configuration due to performance.

But no concrete article or refrences as what will happen if I go beyond 8 node.

Can anybody provide me reason or some refrences as why 24 node is for NAS and only 8 node for SAN

Regards..

JP

New Technical Report Released - TR-4517: ONTAP Select Product Architecture and Best Practices

$

ONTAP Select is clustered Data ONTAP deployed as a virtual machine and providing storage management services on a virtualized commodity server.

The ONTAP Select product can be deployed two different ways:

  • Non-HA (single node). The single-node version of ONTAP Select is well suited for storage infrastructures that provide their own storage resiliency such as VSAN datastores or external arrays which offer data protection at the array layer. The single node Select cluster can also be used for remote and branch offices where the data is protected by replication to a core location.

  • High availability (multi-node). The multi-node version of the solution uses two or four ONTAP Select nodes and adds support for high availability and clustered Data ONTAP non-disruptive operations, all within a shared-nothing environment.

Ontap 9.1 ~Snapshot only visable for domain admins

Hey everyone,

since migrating our cifs shares from 7-Mode to cdot 9.1 the ~snapshot directory is only visable and accessible for domain admins. Access rights to the share are "everyone / full control".

Is this a bug or a feature?

Jan
