Users home directories and quotas

$

we have a 3240 running 8.3.2 - we have moved our home directories onto an svm - all are accessible.

we would like to apply user and or group quotas - whichever is best / recommended.

i have tried to set up a qtree & user quota for myself - the error i get states that the user / user i.d.

cannot be found.

can we use quotas is our situation, or do we need to change our configuration?

any help you can provide would be appreciated....

CDOT 9.2 cifs missing Domain Users

$

Hi,

we are going to migrate our old 7 mode to a new CDOT 9.2 and for the cifs service we are setting up a new AD domain with Samba (4.6.7).

The cifs svm, joins the domain and can see users and groups.

But when i create a share with "Domain Users" full control, no one is able to access.

If I create another domain group and give to this goupt tyhe full control the users are able to use the share.

It seems that cifs svm ignores the fact that the user is member of the "Domain Users" group.

In fact:

c21-filer::*> diag secd authentication show-creds -node c21-filer-node2 -vserver cifs-node1-sata -win-name testuser

UNIX UID: pcuser <> Windows User: MODIANOAD\testuser (Windows Domain User)

GID: pcuser
Supplementary GIDs:
pcuser

Windows Membership:
MODIANOAD\test_share (Windows Domain group)
MODIANOAD\noc (Windows Domain group)
User is also a member of Everyone, Authenticated Users, and Network Users

Privileges (0x2000):
SeChangeNotifyPrivilege

If I remove the user from "Domain Users" and assign him another primary group, this group disappears from "Windows Membership" section.

Anyone has similar problems?

Thanks

Giuseppe

VSCAN setup query

Hi, all

I have inherited some cDOT filers with vscan enabled at the cluster level. I was going to add 4 x new vscanner engines: they are on a 10G link.

However, when checking I noticed that the 4 x old scanners were set up at a cluster level using its 1G management link.

I’m surprised this isn’t causing latency. I’m guessing it was done for ease of management as there are approximately 120 SVM’s.

How would you approach this? I was thinking of creating a new 10G management LIF? Or, any other ideas?

cheers rob

Snapshot -expiry-time is not what you'd think

Regularly scheduled snapshots cycle out whereas manually-created snapshots persist until auto-deleted (if configured) only when short on space or deleted manually.  There is a -expiry-time option for the volume snapshot create command but this counter-intuitively locks the snapshot to prevent deletion until that time.  Although I see the value in that feature, I think that option should be called something like -expiry-lock and instead -expiry-time should auto-delete the snapshot when specified.  Irksome.

Where are the 9.1P files downloaded from?

I have a pair of FAS3220 filers running ONTAP 9.1

I'd like to "upgrade" to 9.1.P8

However, I can't find any way to download it from the support.netapp.com site.

Please help.

Dear Experts!

We using Data Ontap and snapmirror.

We have two sites.

Site1: Data Ontap 8.2.3  , Current date: 21:00oclock CET: 23oclock

Site2: Data Ontap 9.1P2, Current date: 21:00oclock GMT:  21 oclock

However, the date is different on both site.

Snapmirror is running between two sites for long time.

What do you suggest what is the recommended way to change the date on Site2?

BR:
Pal

PS:

My plan:

1. snapmirror quiescence

2. changet he time zone on Site2

3. snapmirror resume

Volume Space Calculation ???

Hi,

We have a FAS 2552 which I have created two aggregates on of 4.77TB. On one of these aggregates I have a Volume which is 700GB which is thick provision and no snapshots or fractional reserve 0%. I present this to a LUN and then a ESXi platform. I create one thick provision VM disk of 450GB.

At this point the LUN shows 450GB in use. Then I lay 450GB of data down and I do this a couple of times. Then the LUN goes offline and the Volume is at 100%! Deleting the data in the drive doesn't seem to fix this. So the LUN is up and down.

Why is this ? I'm confused as the drive is thick provisioned as is the Volume. So I should only ever be using max 450GB! No snapshots.

I would say this is Monday morning blues but I was looking at this problem on Friday and I have done all the documentation and training videos..... I could have forgot the reason for this issue as I did all the calculations in the spring Smiley Happy But then if I was right in my understanding this wouldn't be happening.....

Thanks

ONTAP Recipes: Easily restore individual files by attaching a virtual disk from primary backup

ONTAP Recipes: Did you know you can…?

Easily restore individual files by attaching a virtual disk from primary backup using SnapCenter

You can attach one or more virtual disks from a primary backup to the parent VM (the same VM that the virtual disk was originally associated with and not a different VM). This makes it easier to restore one or more individual files from a drive instead of restoring the entire drive. You can detach the virtual disk after you have restored the files you need.

 1. In the vCenter GUI, click "home icon" in the toolbar, and then select VMs and Templates from the drop-down list.

 2. In the left navigation pane, right-click the VM, then select NetApp SnapCenter in the drop-down list, and then select Attach virtual disk in the secondary drop-down list.

Picture1.png

 3. On the Attach Virtual Disk pane, in the Backup section, select a backup.

You can filter the backup list by clicking "filter icon" and selecting a date and time range, or if you want backups that contain VMware snapshots, or if you want mounted back ups and selecting the location. Click OK.

 4. On the Attach Virtual Disk pane, in the Selected Disks section, select one or more disks you want to attach and then click Attach.

 5. Verify that the virtual disk is attached by performing the following:

   a. Click " home icon" in the toolbar, and then select VMs and Templates from the drop-down list.

   b. In the left Navigator pane, right-click a VM, then select Edit settings in the drop-down list.

   c. In the Edit Settings box, click Manage other disks and then expand the list for each hard disk to see the list of disk files.

Picture2.png

6. The Edit Settings page lists the disks on the VM. You can expand the details for each hard disk to see the list of attached virtual disks.

You can access the attached disks from the host operating system and then retrieve the needed information from the disks.

Unrouted CIFS Share

Running cDOT 9.1 and have a Windows 2016 server accessing a NTFS vol over SMB3, both joined to a domain.  Can I create and safely utilize a 2nd CIFS LIF (unrouted and MTU9000) on the SVM hosting the NTFS vol?

Once or twice a year a domain change will occur that briefly (<5 seconds) disrupts our internal DNS resolution, when this occurs our Windows 2016 app accessing its data over the SMB3 path throws a bunch of errors.

Also we have had one or two occasions in a year where a brief network disruption (<5 sec) on the core breaks routing.  Same issue with errors occuring.

What I'd like to do is join an SVM to a domain, then create a 2nd CIFS LIF (MTU9000) that is not routed and therefore not able to resolve the CIFS name of the SVM, and then access that 2nd CIFS LIF's IP directly from the application server.  This seems risky to me since the 1st CIFS LIF is the one that is acutally bound to the domain.

Bug: Get-Nc* collections does not play well with pipelines

For example, if I do something like `$info = Get-NcCifsServer -Controller $controller | Where-Object { $_.Vserver -eq "vserver"} | Select -First 1`, it would output the result in the console, not executing the `Select` or storing the results into `$info`.

To work around this, I have had to split the statement into two:

$_info = Get-NcCifsServer -Controller $controller

$info = $_info | Where-Object { $_.Vserver -eq "vserver" } | Select -First 1

OnTap 9.1 Active Directory Site

Anyone know how to see the determined AD site for an SVM in OnTap 9.1?

In 8.3, you could see the site with "cifs security show -vserver X" in diag mode.  But can't figure out how to get that same info in 9.1.

nfsstat -l equiv in CDOT

$

Hello Guys,

Need your help again ;-)

I've actually misused nfsstat -l in 7-mode to find out which systems connect to a mountpath / vfiler... but this thing doesn't exist anymore in CDOT so the most likely thing I have is:

network connections active show -vserver <vserver> -service NFS*

Problem with it is it only shows me current connections... so a Server that connects to the mounthpath once a day for a transfer / backup job, will drop and I won't see. Secondly what was really useful about nfsstat is that it would show me the exact OPS that were done since started and that's also not covered.

I can do that with:

statistics start -object volume|nfs -sample-id volnfs_sample
statistics show -sample-id volnfs_sample -counter vserver_name|nfs_read_latency|nfs_read_ops|nfs_total_ops

but it's very ugly and I need to scroll down through all the svms to find the one I need. On top it doesn't show me the nfs clients that connected to it...

There is as well:

statistics top client show

Fantastic thing, shows me what's going on right now! but yet again it fails to show me reported information so I can figure out the essential thing... which is which nfs client connects to my svm?

It thought of getting the information with pktt start interface but the problem there is that it's just way too much information and to sort uniq ip's in a 10GB file... plus I might have several SVMs connection on one interface... so not really the one either...

If you have any ideas, your input would be much appreciated!

Thank you,
axsys

SnapMirror Network Integrity Checker

Having just upgraded to OnTAP 9.1 from 8.3.2, I noticed the following in the Release Notes:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Support for SnapMirror Network Integrity Checker
Beginning with ONTAP 9, network integrity checks are available for SnapMirror network operations.
This feature strengthens the existing detection of on-wire corruption. In the event of on-wire
corruption, the transfer will be aborted with an error message.
This feature comes enabled, by default, between two systems running ONTAP 9.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I then searched for the exact phrase "SnapMirror Network Integrity Checker" and can't find any details anywhere on the NOW site. Does anyone know how this feature works, how to check the status, etc. ?

7-Mode CIFS options in cDot

Hello,

on our old Metro Cluster we set following options to optimize performance with Microsoft Access Databases and large Excel files:

options cifs.SharingViolationDelay 0
options cifs.SharingViolationRetries 0

no_atime_update on

After migrating to cDot our users have performance problems again. What are the euqivalent options on cDot 9.1?

Compaction and Data Protection Volumes

$

We just upgraded to OnTAP 9.1P8. Production system is AFF so compaction is working by default. DR system is FAS8060. I enabled compaction at the aggregate level, but when I tried to enable at the volume level, it was only enabled on the root volumes. Is that because the other volumes are data protection volumes? Is there any value in turning on compaction on this system under these circumstances?

Aggregate Inline Deduplication - Shared Blocks Cannot be Relocated?

$

i am reading up on OnTAP 9.2 as we are planning an upgrade from 9.1 soon. In tr-4476, the following line is given about Aggregate Inline Deduplication:

----------------------------------------------------------

Cross-volume shared blocks cannot be relocated

----------------------------------------------------------

This sounds like volumes can't be migrated/moved if they contain shared blocks with other volumes although I'm sure that's not what's intended. Does anyone have insight into this?
