When running the  Get-NtapClusterAsupData -Cluster  command it halts with the following exception error.

ConvertTo-NtapDataRow : Exception setting "Item": "Exception calling "set_Item" with "2" argument(s): "Unable to cast object of type 'System.Object[]'

I have tried the one step and downloading the ASUP data and then creating the docs but still get the same error.

Down sizing flexvol containing LUNS

$

Just a quick question to double check.. we have a number of flexvols ( thick ) that contain thin provisioned LUNs, now that the LUNs are populated and dedupe etc has done its work the LUNs take up barely a quarter of the flexvols. I presume its safe to shrink the size of the flexvols on the fly to a more realistic size without having impact on the LUNs.

1 Overview

The NetApp ONTAP operating system provides the ability to unify clients under a single namespace by way of storage virtual machines (SVMs). These SVMs can live on clusters that are up to 24 nodes in size. Each SVM provides the ability to offer individualized LDAP, NIS, DNS, and local file configurations for authentication purposes. These features are also known as “name services.”

External servers can provide replicated copies of databases containing user information, such as UID, GID, group membership, home directory, and other information, as well as netgroup and name resolution capabilities. These external servers make it possible to manage large environments that span global locations without extra administrative overhead and with the ability to reduce WAN latency by providing localized copies of databases to clients and servers.

Snapmirror progress indicator

I´m new to the community and don't know if this is the right place to post a question. Please relocate if that's the case.

Scenario:

I have to FAS in 8.3 7mode with several vols with snapmirror replica relations.

One Vol size is 4.6TB and left with the replica unscheduled for 4 month.

In that period, the vol got 260GB of accumulated snapmirror snapshots.

Last week I started the replica again and so far "Progress"* show that it already copied more than 302GB.

I have a good measure of the Site 2 Site bandwidth.

The question:

Is there some rule to calculate how much is missing, "Progress" GB seems not to be an accurate estimate.

I need to estimte when is going to release the snapmirror snapshot, i need to reclaime the space.

[Netapp Powershell Toolkit] Assigning an export-policy

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to apply an export-policy to a volume using the netapp powershell toolkit.  Does anyone have a good example of how to do this?  I saw another thread on this subject on these forums but it didn't make it very clear to me.

Reporting Nodes Added Automatically When Moving iSCSI-Based Volumes?

$

A colleague of mine indicated he's never reconfigured reporting nodes when moving volumes containing LUNs from one HA Pair in a cluster to another HA Pair. My understanding from NetApp documentation has been that you have to add the destination nodes as reporting nodes in advance of a volume move if you want to retain optimized paths.

I created a volume as a test and moved it to another HA Pair without adjusting reporting nodes. Sure enough, the nodes I moved the volume to were added automatically to the list of reporting nodes for the LUN! This behavior contradicts NetApp documentation which indicates it must be done manually. Has anyone else encountered this? Does anyone know if there's a scenario where it wouldn't happen automatically?

Will splitting a FlexClone cause high CPU / DISK usage?

Hi,

I am new to NetApp technologies & came across this licensed feature "FlexClone"

What concerns me is that, what type of resources is needed from a filer when a split occurs for FlexClone.

Issues with Fractional Reserve on NetApp FAS8020

$

Hi,

Here some info :

- NAS NetApp FAS8020

- Cluster mde 8.2.2

- Volume used for VmWare Datastore and created with the Provision Storage for VmWare utility

- Options used for the volumes : no snapshot - dedup on - fractional reserve 100%

- Vm created with disk provisioned immediately ( so not thin )

We encounter some issues or strange comportments on our volumes and after few investigations, we find out that it come from the fractional reserve parameter à 100% by default on the volumes

The fact are :

- When we created a VM ( Linux or Windows) , the datastore take 100% of the VM size so it seems that the fractional reserve is not used in that case

- When we migrate a Linux VM from a datastore A to a datastore B, we need to have a datastore B with 200% VM size during the opération and after the operation, the datastore B keep 200% of the VM size --> Is it a normal comportment ? ( we undestrand that il come from the fractional reserve because, if we unchecked the fractional reserve, the datastore take 100% of the VM size)

- When we migratd a Windows VM from a datastore A to a datastore B, we need to have a datastore B with 200% VM size during the opération and after the operation, the datastore B do not keep 200% of the VM size but only 140-150 % and not always the same values  --> Is it a normal comportment and why it is different than a Linux VM?  My guess is that the dedup is working on the volume so that's why the datastore do not keep 200% of eack Windows VM but i'm not sure of that

A last question : I was not able to find the correct best practice for the fractional reserve, do we have to use it for VMWare datastore  if we don't use snapshot and disk immediately provisioned ?

Thanks a lot for your help or advices and sorry for my English in advance !

vserver name-mapping (win-unix) not working (unix security style)

$

I've been searching for this online and have not come across any issues from other users I'm afraid.

So basically I want to do a name mapping between win to unix. security style of the volume is unix and I want 2 windows users (win-user1 and win-user2) to be mapped to unix user unix-user. Reading this KB: https://kb.netapp.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/1030441 and other explanations I expect my name mapping to look something like this:

vserver name-mapping modify -direction win-unix -position 1 -pattern win-usr1 -replacement unix-user

vserver name-mapping modify -direction win-unix -position 1 -pattern win-usr2 -replacement unix-user

II now access from my windows system over CIFS to this volume and create a file.

Now I'm going to the linux machine which has it mounted over NFS and check the permission and what I can see is that it's 'nfsnobody'. I've been googling about it online and found this article of Justion (Thank you Justin as always!) : https://whyistheinternetbroken.wordpress.com/2017/01/24/mixed-perceptions-multiprotocol-nas/ and in this article it's perfectly explained that the default unix user which is set for CIFS is if you don't touch it set to 'pcuser'. pcuser in this case will write down the file with uid=65534. 65534 in unix is usually either 'nobody' or 'nfsnobody' so this is proof that the name mapping is not working at all.

So I think there's 2 possibilities here:

1. Name-mapping expression is wrong?

> I believe this is the case, since the user is coming from a workgroup and I'm not sure how it's going to try to authenticate

2. everything is running through default user and default user would need to be changed?

> I guess if you have a name-mapping in place this will be overwritten.

3. win/unix user is missing on netapp and/or win/linux side

> user is in place on netapp for ntfs:
cifs users-and-groups local-user show -vserver svmaxt
Vserver      User Name                   Full Name            Description
------------ --------------------------- -------------------- -------------
svmx       SVMX\Administrator                             Built-in administrator account
svmx       SVMX\win-usr1             -                    -
svmx       SVMX\win-usr2        -                    -

> user is in place on netapp for unix:
svmx         nobody          65535  65535
svmx         unix-user          700    700
svmx         pcuser          65534  65534
svmx         root            0      1

svmx         daemon              1
svmx         nobody              65535
svmx         unix-group            700
svmx         pcuser              65534
svmx         root                0

Anyone has any idea how I could further check this. Or know's how the regular expression should look like, so that the name-mapping does work?

Thank you!

Axsys

SAN Migration Frm ONTAP 9 to Another ONTAP 9 Cluster in different location Mapped to Oracle host

Hello All!!

Hope you are doing good ?!!

I have a question..

We are planning for SAN migration From One netapp Cluster to Another NetaPP cluster. These SAN luns are hosted on Oracle host. One oracle host is using 41 LUNs.

My question is once migration is complete and we perform the cutover and mapping of new Luns to the Host , will the oracle database not face the indexing issue? on new storage LUNs. If yes? how can i frix it ? Also once migration is complete the source box will be discarded.

We have aleady configured Snapmirror between Source and Destination Cluster.

Please excuse me i am still a naive in NetApp. Smiley Happy

Egerly waiting for your reply!!!

How to copy ontap 9.1p12 image file to /etc/software folder in 8.3.1 RC1 cluster mode

Hi Mates,

I am planing to upgrade Data ontap from 8.3.1RC1 to 9.1p12. In our environment we dont have http and ftp servers.

Even i have tried online http web severs like hfs & mos.exe, but it was failed to copy the image file with the error "Failed to add the software image to the cluster. Verify if the image and the specified URL are valid and ensure that there is sufficient space in the system management storage area"

Can any one help me how to copy ontap image file in to /etc/software folder in the cluser mode. even i have tried to open ETC $ share.

when i hit the cifs share show command i did not  find ETC share, there are only admin$ and c $ share.

SVM DR

Good day,

With SVM Disaster Recovery I have 2 questions:

1) Is synchronous snapmirror supported?

2) Can you  failover a single volume from the SVM or it is only meant in SVM level recovery?

Thanks

Migrate Cifs to a Windows Server

$

Hello,

We are currently researching how to migrate our current Netapp Cifs environment to a Windows 2012 Distributed File Services environment. I was looking to see if anyone has done this in the past and can provide any experience as to best practice or gotcha's. We are trying to determine if there is any ability to setup replication of some sort from the Netapp Cifs environment to the Windows server or if everything simply has to be copied via a tool like RoboCopy in one fell swoop. If there is anyone who can provide any insight into this topic, I would greatly appreciate it. We are running on a Netapp FAS 2240-2 with 7-mode 8.2.3 P6.

Thanks in advance.

why cannot change ssh service port to user define port

$

I have a financial customer

They have to change default ssh service port to user define port.

I confirmed that I could not change the default ssh port.
But I could not find the reason elsewhere.

And I tried to change it using the system services firewall policy command, but it did not work.
I wonder why this command exists.

I want to change ssh default port to any port what I want.

Is there any ways to change?

Maxfilesize for subdirectory

WARNING wafl.dir.size.max.warning: Directory /vol/Snapmirror_Mails(1)/mail/v3store/34398/incoming_archive_botree@botree.co.in/Maildir/.Old_Mails/cur/ is approaching the maxdirsize limit. Current maxdirsize limit is less than the default maxdirsize. Reduce the number of files in the directory, or use the "vol options" command to increase the maxdirsize limit for the volume containing the indicated directory.

We are getting the above error on NetApp messages. Is there any way we can find out maxfile-size (max files limiatation) of a sub-directory inside the directory.

Splitting a Cluster

$

We have a 6 node cluster and want split the cluster into two -> Send 4 nodes to one location and 2 nodes to another location.  Nodes 1-4 will keep their original cluster identity and SVMs.

Is there any way to remove(evict) the last 2 nodes from the cluster and EITHER   A) start a new cluster OR   B) join them to another existing cluster without having to lose or move the volumes out of the aggregates?  LUNs and CIFS shares in the aggregates on the last 2 nodes.

Integrating Ontap with multidomain FreeIPA/Redhat IdM

$

I'm trying to integrate a FAS (Ontap 9) with our FreeIPA (aka RedHat IdM) installation, so that we can offer NFSv4+krb5 to Linux clients.  This is proving to be a  bit tricky.

Background:

The IPA kerberos realm is: IPA.LOCALDOMAIN (corresponding dns: ipa.localdomain)

However, the user realms are: LOCALDOMAIN (dns: localdomain) and STUDENT.LOCALDOMAIN (dns: student.localdomain).

(The users and group live in AD, but the IPA realm trusts the AD realms).

Both the NFS client and the FAS are enrolled to IPA.LOCALDOMAIN and live under DNS domain ipa.localdomain.

Note also that usernames on the clients are fully qualified - so my username is 'rns@localdomain' rather than just 'rns'.

I can successfully mount a test volume on the Linux client with this:

# mount -o sec=krb5 netapp-nfs2.ipa.localdomain:/rnstest2 /mnt4

#

.. but when I try to access /mnt4 from a Linux client using my own identity (with a valid Kerberos ticket), I get permission denied:

$ cd /mnt4
-bash: cd: /mnt4: Permission denied

The FAS event log shows:

Time Node Severity Event

4/23/2018 12:15:38 netapp-poc01-01 ERROR Nblade.Nfsv4NsdbDomainMismatch: NFSv4 server 172.25.177.77 received domain string localdomain@ipa.localdomain from client 172.25.176.72, which does not match the '-v4-id-domain' value ipa.localdomain.

[ 6] Failed to initiate Kerberos authentication. Trying NTLM.
[ 6] Successfully connected to ip 172.25.176.51, port 389 using TCP

The problem seems to be that Ontap is incorrectly parsing my identity as:

  user-name: rns

  domain string: localdomain@ipa.localdomain

.. instead of:

  username: rns@localdomain

  domain string: ipa.localdomain

Any idea how I can configure Ontap to parse this correctly?

Regards,

Robert.
