SnapMirror Destination volume size

$

Hello,

I have source volume 5 TB size, 3TB are Data Space and 2 TB are Snap Space. I would like to create a Destination Volume, let assume that it doesn't have any Snap on the destination. Can Destination volume be at Size of 3 TB like the Source Data Space or it must be the same full Size of the Source, 5 TB?

Many Thanks !

Hello,

I can see on our AFF 8080 EX high Backend Latency. What does this mean and more important how to improve this?

General, how can this happen? We use All Flash SSD 8080 EX MCC Storage with peaks 30 000 IOPs and WAFL consum 10 Cores and Latency is up-to 10ms.

We need do add more Disks to the System? Can we improve WAFL CPU usage with this Action?

OnTAP 9.4 4-node cluster

I have Commvault as my backup software and I need to set NDMP HIST variable to no on the NetApp. I have a really hard time finding out how to set it. Could somone point me to the steps to set this up? I see some posts on setting the environment variable during ndmpcopy session but it apparently does not apply in this case.

thank you.

How to Get Top 10 Consumers Via Get-NcQuotaReport

We would like to create a report that gives us the top X consumers of storage space on our volumes.  We can get a list of the users and their space used via Get-NcQuotaReport | select QuotaUsers,DiskUsed.  However, the number in the DiskUsed field is left aligned so it does not sort well. We can use a Format-Table to right-align the numbers, but we get an error if we try and sort after the formatting is done. How can we get the disk used right-aligned so we can sort on it?

function Get-Usage{

Get-NcQuotaReport | select QuotaUsers,DiskUsed | format-table QuotaUsers,@{n='Bytes';e={$_.DiskUsed};align='right'}
}

Get-Usage | Sort-Object -Property Bytes

Advice Creating SnapVault Relationship - No source Qtree

$

Hoping someone can help.

Source filer: FAS2552; verrsion NetApp Release 8.2.2RC2 7-Mode
Destination filer: FAS2554; NetApp Release 8.2.2RC2 7-Mode

In Data OnTap 7-mode, I'm trying to create SnapVaults of an existing FlexVol volume on source filer to separate destination filer. The source FlexVol just holds a single LUN which itself stores a single VMFS datastore. The volume wasn't created with a qtree so the data doesn't sit inside one. Some sources on the Internet say a qtree is required on the source volume in order to create SnapVaults of it but I'm not sure this is the case.

I'm using the SnapVault Relationship Create Wizard in OnCommand System Manager 3.1.2 to create the snapvault relationship.

If I try to create the SnapVault relationship by selecting the source volume itself, I receive warning message "Are you sure you want to backup volume to a qtree... the resulting volume to qtree SnapVault relationship will not be importable by OnCommand Unified Manager" (full warning message shown in attached image). Does this mean I won't be able to restore from the SnapVaults without the source volume having a qtree? If not, is it possible for me to add a qtree to the source volume without destroying data and how can I get that data to "sit inside" that qtree (if that's required)? If so, I'm hoping someone can advise me on how I can do this.

Instead of selecting the source volume in the wizard, I've also got the option of selecting a "Non Qtree" sub entry (also shown in attached image file) and I don't receive a warning message when selecting that.

Unfortunately I don't have any existing SnapVault relationships I can check against.

Not sure if it is relevant... the source FlexVol volume has hourly and daily snapshots scheduled by the VSC vCenter plugin and these are snap-mirrored to the destination filer and work fine.

We don't need weekly snapshots/snapmirrors but do need to generate weekly SnapVaults of the FlexVol and have these stored only on the destination filer. The VSC plugin cannot be used used for this as we are not running Clustered Data ONTAP 8.2 or higher. This is why I'm trying to configure the SnapVaults in OnCommand System Manager.

Thanks in advance.

LUN how to change -restore-inaccessible true to false

$

I've spent two days playing around with this and haven't been able to find a solution.

We have random LUN's that are unmanageable.  We can't take them offline or delete them.

lun modify -path <path> -state offline

gives

Error: command failed: The lun is inaccessible for I/O and management due to a restore operation.

We are not running any restores nor backups and no matter what it stays like that.

doing a lun show -instance -path <path> shows "Inaccessible Due to Restore" as being true but I don't see anywhere how to change that.  I don't see a command to view restores in progress or to cancel them.  I don't see an option in lun modify to change it.  I don't see anything anywhere to get rid of that inaccessible setting.

Would anyone happen to know how to change that setting so we can offline these luns and free up a lot of space?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

I am using NMSDK with python

with c-mode filer , by using "system-get-ontapi-version" i get the major-minor version as 1:32

with this version i am using different NMSDK workflow like "volume-get-iter", "snapshot-create", "clone-create" etc

for different ontap-api version like 1:17, 1:130.. etc all the workflows("volume-get-iter", "snapshot-create", "clone-create" etc) format/inputs/outputs will be same as 1:32 or it get changes?

is there any dependency between the api-version and NMSDK API generations

Version Flexible SnapMirror Not Transferring All Snapshots

$

We use version flexible snapmirror for all SnapMirror jobs, and we use a custom policy that includes the "all_source_snapshots" label. I recently set up two new volumes on a 9.3 system and replicated them to a 9.2 system. They worked fine until I needed to rename the source and destination volumes. After that change, the snapmirror jobs fail when run on a schedule (they work most of the time when I run them manually the next day). The errors complains that the snapmirror snapshot already exists on the destination. Even weirder, I just noticed that not all of the regular snapshots are being sent. There are 7 snapshots retained on both volumes, but only 5 of them show up for one of them and 6 for the other. Any ideas?

Installing ONTAP Select 2-node cluster on 1 TB storage

Is it possible?

When I use ONTAP Deploy 2.10, IT requires a minimum of 2 TB of free space on storage.

But I want to deploy 2-node cluster on a 1 TB RAID array on each server. How to do it?

How do I get all CIFS sesssions with a certain idle time?

Hello, everyone,
I want to see all CIFS sessions whose idle time is higher/lower/equal to a certain duration.  Unfortunately I can't get the correct value after "-idle-time".
It always looks like this:
FAS80402::> vserver cifs session show -idle-time >0
Error: "0" is an invalid value for field "-idle-time <elapsed>"

FAS80402::> vserver cifs session show -idle-time 0
Error: "0" is an invalid value for field "-idle-time <elapsed>"

FAS80402::> vserver cifs session show -idle-time >3s
Error: "3s" is an invalid value for field "-idle-time <elapsed>"

Does anyone know how to set the value?

Thank you very much.
Best regards

Michael

Multiple_Values for Node name for disk and system performance command

$

Hi

On executing the "statistics disk show" command, we get Node as "Multiple_Values" for some of the Netapp Cluster. Some Netaapp cluster return correct node names, but some return the above.

What does this mean? In what scenarios is the value "Multiple_values" returned instead of actual node name. and in this case, how do we interpret the performance counters?

System Configuration Backup - Pointing to External Location

$

Hello,

I'm trying to follow the best practice of pointing system configuration backups to external locations, but unfortunately the only option is to point the backups to a web server and I am not an IIS expert. We have a site I use to upload files over FTP to filers when doing upgrades, but now I need files to be written to this site.  I was able to turn on basic auth and use a domain account that I made a local admin, but I don't want to preserve this configuration since it is unsecure. I tried enabling SSL but I got an auth error. Any recommendations?

About the new language [utf8mb4] of ONTAP 9.5

Hi Community

We are building NetApp in Japan.

A new language utf8mb4 has been implemented since 9.5.

Until now, we had language as CIFS only, NFS only, CIFS / NFS [C.UTF - 8] [ja_JP.PCK_v2.UTF-8] etc. However, recently there are many problems of surrogate pair characters, I'm worried about whether to set the default language of construction to [utf 8mb4].
What do you think?

Space reclamation on thick provisioned LUN/Volume - vaai unmap

$

Hi there,

This has probably been answered several times but i can't find anything for Thick lun/volumes. Maybe I have a misunderstanding of what a thick netapp lun is. Our vsphere environment is provisioned with Thick volumes that contain a Lun (1:1) with space reservation enabled. Hence I think these are Thick LUNs, please correct me if I am wrong. Running ontap 9.1 with ESXi 6.0 and vmfs 5

I was going to manually run the unmap command from the esxi to reclaim space after noticing that space was not being given back to the lun/volume (expected on vmfs -5) backing the datastore and noticed that it is not supported:

esxcli storage core device list -d naa.600a098038303049332b454a516b504e

    Thin Provisioning Status: unknown
    Attached Filters: VAAI_FILTER
     VAAI Status: supported

esxcli storage core device vaai status get -d naa.600a098038303049332b454a516b504e

   VAAI Plugin Name: VMW_VAAIP_NETAPP
  ATS Status: supported
  Clone Status: supported
  Zero Status: supported
  Delete Status: unsupported

I did noticed that space allocation is not set on the lun but based on a netapp web doc I think it is only meant for Thin luns and i think mines are Thick.

All i am trying to do is to give the space back to the storage when I Svmotion or  delete a VM, and based on the size of some of the volumes is has never been done. Now, will enabling space allocation on the lun work even though it says it is only for thinly provisioned ones. If it does, i dont see the point of doing it becasue ill have to offline the lun to do so, but it will be good to now for future luns.

What am I missing? What are my options?

Thanks in advance!

Message: secd.dc.out.of.pipe.instances

Has anyone seen this error?

We are getting these from mulitple clusters at different locations.

All errors point to the same DC.  Spoke with AD team and they noticed hight CPU during the day and also saw a Access Denied error associated with the account (CIFSservername$), the name with a $ sign at end.

We have started getting this error: Message: secd.dc.out.of.pipe.instances: MSRPC for Vserver name to DC name:\netlogon was retried 968 times (delay: 1081793 usecs).

Description: This message occurs when the Windows Domain Controller (DC), while responding to an MSRPC request from Data ONTAP(R), returns an error indicating that it ran out of pipe instances in the listening state. This can happen when the requests from Data ONTAP are received by the DC during a timing window when the limited number of listening pipe instance are already allocated to other requests. Such errors received by Data ONTAP might result in longer CIFS/NFS authentication and/or access times, potentially resulting in CIFS/NFS client timeouts.
