Hi Guys,

I have netapp FAS 3220 it has ontap 8.1.4P1 7 mode. Now I am planning to upgrade to 8.3.2 CDOT. Below is the my queries Please help.

1. It has single controller so  is it required  cluster switch ?

2. Cabling need to be change? We have NetApp DS4243 Disk shelf and single controller

3. We can directly upgrade from 8.1.4 7 mode to 8.3.3 cluster mode?

4. If I upgrade to cluster on tap OS from 7 mode all data in volumes erase?

Please guide me.

Thanks

SVM Root Volume Protection Not Updating on Two New Nodes

$

We just added two nodes to our NetApp cluster, making it a four node cluster. I am trying to expand the SVM root volume protection that I set up previously, following the steps in the SVM Root Volume Protection Express Guide.

The problem is: I created the new volumes on nodes 3 and 4 and re-ran the initialize-ls-set command, but it is ignoring the two new nodes. I tried the update-ls-set command to see if that would work, but I'm getting the same results. Does anyone have suggestions?

Specifics (for one of the SVMs):

volume create -vserver <vserver_name> -volume <vserver_name>_root_ls03 -aggregate <node_3_aggregate> -size 1gb -state online -type DP

volume create -vserver <vserver_name> -volume <vserver_name>_root_ls04 -aggregate <node_4_aggregate> -size 1gb -state online -type DP

snapmirror create -source-path <cluster_name>://<vserver_name>/<vserver_name>_root -destination-path <cluster_name>://<vserver_name>/<vserver_name>_root_ls03 -type LS -schedule 1min

snapmirror create -source-path cithqnacl01p://<vserver_name>/<vserver_name>_root -destination-path <cluster_name>://<vserver_name>/<vserver_name>_root_ls04 -type LS -schedule 1min

snapmirror initialize-ls-set -source-path <cluster_name>://<vserver_name>/<vserver_name>_root

Hello,

I want to do the FAS8020 storage fresh initialization with two disk shelf model(DS4243,DS4246), but those two disk shelf was connected to existing storage FAS3240. Unfortunately FAS3240 was Destroyed in Flood. So we dont have the existing FAS3240 and it configuration data also.

The exixting disk shelf are connected to FAS3240, but FAS storage was not in live. Customer need to take backup from Existing setup, We dont have any configuration details of existing setup. How can i take data from existing setup.

Can you confirm without existing controller we will do the head swap, if it is possible please provide the procedure for do this.

Please find the below existing and new setup

Existing Setup:

Model                   -    FAS3240 with dual controller

Ontao version        -    Data Ontap 8.1 (7 mode)

Disk shelf              -    DS4243, DS4246

New Setup:

Model                   -    FAS8020 with dual controller

Ontao version        -    Data Ontap 8.3.X (CDot mode)

Disk shelf             -    DS4243, DS4246

Thanks in advance

SVM DR (‑identity‑preserve ture) , can implement with (on-box) DNS Load Balancing?

Hi

Well, The question is more Microsoft oriented – but I couldn’t find a MS resource (except https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771640(v=ws.11).aspx   -   Understanding Zone Delegation).

NetApp relevant TR’s not saying it specifically, and I want to make sure my implementation is right:

https://www.netapp.com/us/media/tr-4523.pdf  -   DNS Load Balancing in ONTAP Configuration and Best Practices

https://library.netapp.com/ecm/ecm_download_file/ECMP12462587  - Clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 SVM Disaster Recovery Preparation Express Guide

https://library.netapp.com/ecm/ecm_download_file/ECMP12454817   - Clustered Data ONTAP® 8.3 Data Protection Guide

Is it safe to add the DR LIF ip as name server to the DNS delegation?  or that might create performance or other intermitted issues? (depends I guess how MS doing the load spread between these servers)

Should I maybe not use it on the SVM DR and just use classic  dynamic DNS?

Snapshot reversation on Snapmirror SnapVault destination volume

Hi Guys,

Just want to understand though my question could be a silly one,

do we require to keep any snapshot reserve for the SnapMirror/SnapVault destination volume. since the snapvault or snapmirror keeps the replicated data at the destination volume. is it a good idea to configure for snapshot reserve on the destination volume.

Files from snapmirror destination failed to mount access denied

Hello Guys

During our Backup consolidation project We noticed the "showstopper". The point for our test is to avoid to touch production data, so we are testing data/files from snapmirror destination volume. But some files within snapmirror destination volume respond as access denied. I'm wondering data on snapmirror destination are read only so it shoud not be an issue to read the data. Overmore only aprox 10% files respond as access denied the majority of them are processed.

Did anyone face with such behaviour? Is it possible that access denied can be caused by live snapmirroring activity (not in Idle state yet)?

Hi all,

I have a strange situation and I'm stuck. Name resolution works for the admin svm but not for the data svm.

Change home port of a cluster management LIF permanently?

$

Hi,

ONTAP 9.1RC1

FAS8040HA

I have a LIF for NDMP backups but it's on 1Gbps link which gets saturated frequently. The LIF has cluster management role and I am able to move it to one of the 10GbE ports. However, I can't seem to make the 10GbE port as the LIF's new home port. Is it possible to re-home a LIF with the cluster management role?

If I have a datastore and it has several VM hosts, one of them has a mounted NFS share. If I take a snapshot via VSC, would this snapshot contains changes being made on the NFS share?

Removing Aggregate Assignments From an SVM

$

This should be pretty straightforward, but I've not done it before and just want to ensure there aren't any 'gotchas'. Somehow, two of our SVM's were created with aggregate assignments. I don't want any aggregate assignments on any of our SVMs. My plan is to simply choose the SVM in System Manager and click "Do not delegate volume creation." Has anyone done this, and can you verify there were no ill effects?

How to migrate Cluster mode to 7 mode

Hello,

we just purchased a new HA FAS8020 controllers, we have the following issues:

1. we didn't purchase new disk shelves, therefore we are going to use our existing DS4243,DS4246 SATA shelves. We need to take data from existing storage, but unfortunately it was destoryed in flood. New storage come with daa ontap 8.3.x. So we are plan to migrate from cluster mode to 7 mode and reterive data from 7 mode connect with two disk shelves.
2. So I am not aware of migrate from  Cluster mode enviornment to 7-Mode enviornment. If any one know can you share the KB article or document.

Qos on network

Hi,

ONTAP 9.1RC1

FAS8040HA

I have data LIFs on 10GbE connections. In the meantime, we need to use the 10GbE for NDMP backups as well. I am concerned about NDMP backups traffic can saturate the 10GbE connections and cause service interruptions on the data traffic. I look into network management guide, it mentions about "QoS marking" can be set to prioritize *outgoing* traffic per IP Space. My questions are:

- Unfortunately, there is only one IPspace "Default" in the configuration.It looks like if I change the value DSCP values, it will affect all?

- It seems to me smaller value means higher priority? I don't see it mentioned in the guide.

- Currently all protocols have it disabled. What happens if I enable only NDMP with lower priority such as 50? Is it sufficient to ensure it won't impact CIFS/NFS/iSCSI traffic?

Default
                    CIFS                 10  false
                    FTP                  48  false
                    HTTP-admin           48  false

How to get optimal usable capacity from new aggregate.

$

Hello,

I have a FAS8020 and to which I added 2 DS4243 24x1TB disk shelves. I created the new aggregate with the following configurations:

45 Disks 2 spares

Raid-DP

Raid size 15

3 raid groups of 15 disks each

total space is 28.37 TB

Available space is 28.37 TB

I was hoping to see way more usable space but it seems that Ontap is taking 19 TB for its self which seems way to high.

Can someone please help me determine how I can get the most space out of the aggregate.

Thanks,

Arsen B.

API Returns different value in 8.2 and 8.3

$

We have upgraded from 8.2.3 to 8.3.2P6 recently

Since then we can no longer get the node name when making queries to the API from our monitoring tool.

We use SPLUNK and this impacts our monitoring signficantly, as we can no longer get system stats.

Within SPLUNK the SystemPerfHandler throws a query to the target filer: https://<server>/servlets/netapp.servlets.admin.XMLrequest_filer with a the following content:

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>

<!DOCTYPE netapp SYSTEM 'file:/etc/netapp_filer.dtd'>

<netapp version="1.13" xmlns="http://www.netapp.com/filer/admin">

<perf-object-instance-list-info-iter>

<objectname>system</objectname>

<max-records>50</max-records>

<tag></tag>

</perf-object-instance-list-info-iter>

</netapp>

8.2.3 the query returrns

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?>

<!DOCTYPE netapp SYSTEM 'file:/etc/netapp_gx.dtd'>

<netapp version='1.21' xmlns='http://www.netapp.com/filer/admin'>

<results status="passed">

<attributes-list>

<instance-info>

<name>system</name>

<uuid>filer:kernel:system</uuid>

</instance-info>

<instance-info>

<name>system</name>

<uuid>filer-02:kernel:system</uuid>

</instance-info>

</attributes-list>

<num-records>2</num-records>

</results>

</netapp>

8.3 returns something a little different:

<!DOCTYPE netapp SYSTEM 'file:/etc/netapp_gx.dtd'>

<netapp version='1.32' xmlns='http://www.netapp.com/filer/admin'>

<results status="passed">

<attributes-list>

<instance-info>

<name>cluster</name>

<uuid>0ffcce89-b5e3-11e4-ba58-123478563412</uuid>

</instance-info>

</attributes-list>

<num-records>1</num-records>

</results>

</netapp>

What has changed and what should the query be to return each node name?

I have a case open with netapp and splunk, but am wondering if the wider community has come across this issue.

Any way to add thousands separators to the CLI output in clustered ontap?

$
0
0

Hi,

ONTAP 9.1 RC1

I often use the CLI to perform admin work because alot of things can't be done via web interface. One thing I find annoying is outputs often have large numbers. For example, in the output below, it'd be very helpful to be able to quickly know which the values of "files" and "files-used" are. Having thousand separators will make it very easy to tell.

ntap01::> volume show -vserver nas01 -volume projects  -fields total,used,files,files-used
vserver  volume              total used    files    files-used
-------- ------------------- ----- ------- -------- ----------
nas01 projects 380GB 58.58GB 99614713 6225917

Is it possible to tell the CLI to add commas for thousands, millions, etc.?

Thanks,

Symantec AV with cDOT general advice

Hi, we are running Symantec Protection Engine : Version 7.5.1.5 on netapp cDOT 8.3.1. - mandatory scan off

I haven't been hugely impressed as scanners appear to randomly drop off our SVMs.

eg SVMA on Cluster1 lost 4 of 5 scanners causing huge latency. The other SVM's on Cluster1 not affected.

All the SVMs use  the cluster management LIFS. I don't see disconnects in the logs.

Does anyone else use Symantec AV?

Given the random issues can anyone recommend any other solutions?

I'd prefer not using any AV with Netapp.

thanks Rob

I have used ndmpcopy to copy a file to an nfs share on my system. (8.1.4 7mode)

But i cannot read the file from the server with NFS mount.

The permissions on my source file are 600.

I cannot find any information on how to change this to 644 so i can copy the file.

Can anyone point me in the correct direction?
