Regarding Physical Used Capacity in 9.14

Hi everyone,

We're currently investigating some significant differences in the reported physical used capacity between NetApp versions 9.13 and 9.14 and would appreciate your insights.

In version 9.13, when querying the physical used capacity using the CLI command

volume show -volume Apr* -fields size,available,total,used,physical-used, we received the following results:

vserver               volume               size                   available           total            used       physical-used
--------             -----------                     -------            ---------                 -------            -----       -------------
NetApp_2       Apr_ss_15gb       17.89GB          17.89GB        17.89GB       340KB       340KB
NetApp_2        Apr_ss_70gb       78.86GB          78.86GB       78.86GB       308KB      308KB

However, when querying the same information in version 9.14 with the same CLI command,

volume show -volume Apr* -fields size,available,total,used,physical-used,we observed a notable increase in the reported physical used capacity:

vserver           volume                          size          available        total        used      physical-used
--------             -----------                     -------             ---------          -------         -----          -------------
NetApp_2     Apr_ss_15gb       17.89GB       17.89GB       17.89GB    468KB   17.99GB
NetApp_2    Apr_ss_70gb         78.86GB       78.86GB      78.86GB    456KB    79.30GB

We're trying to understand the reasons behind this discrepancy:

  1. What constitutes physical used capacity in NetApp?
  2. What changes were made between versions 9.13 and 9.14 that could account for the differences in physical used capacity?
  3. What additional data is included in the calculation of physical used capacity in version 9.14 compared to version 9.13?
  4. Where can we find documentation or resources detailing these changes to better understand how to interpret the physical used metric in our storage environment?

Any insights or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.!

NetApp LUN space allocation setting

Hi all,

I having an issue on space discrepancies between storage LUN and end host space (LUN that mapped on windows server). After go through some research, I found out that required to enable the space allocation on thin LUN to make host-side space management identifies blocks of data that have been deleted on the host file system allow ONTAP to reclaim space. I've already enable the setting for space allocation and just want to ask few asking here after we enable the feature.

1) After we enable the space allocation feature/setting in the LUNs and already verify the features is already enabled, how long can we can expect to see the reflect of space on the storage LUN will align/tally with the space available in the host end?

Please advise as I need to understand what the result we can expect after enabled the space allocation feature. Tahnks

Reagrding Netapp Volume Capacity Values

Hi Team ,

we're using physical used capacity to compute various metrics. We've observed that for some volumes, the used capacity and physical used capacity values are the same, while for others, they differ.

Here are the details from our NetApp system (version 9.13):

```
A250::> volume show -fields size, available, total, used, physical-used
vserver volume      size     available  total    used     physical-used
------- ----------  -------  ---------  -------  -------  -------------
A250-01 vol0        151.3GB  72.74GB    143.7GB  70.99GB  68.25GB
A250-02 vol0        151.3GB  77.03GB    143.7GB  66.70GB  62.60GB
svm1    Lun_1       2.06GB   2.06GB     2.06GB   632KB    632KB
svm1    Lun_test_3  10.30GB  10.30GB    10.30GB  692KB    692KB
svm1    svm1_root   1GB      970.3MB    972.8MB  2.48MB   7.96MB
```
We've tried to understand the reasons behind this discrepancies but couldn't get a clear explanation.

Could you please help us understand about this  volume capacity values.

Thank You !

files disappeared every few nights

Hi Team,

We having AFF8020 , version 9.7P22 (the support contract is done for this system)

We've noticed already 3-4 times, that files disappeared (now we'll notice if it's happening every night, or once in few nights).

The 1st time it happened, we've first created a clone from week ago snapshot to keep it in the side if the 'restore' won't work, and then we restored the original volume to few days ago, and the files got back.

From the UI, I can't see something strange.

But, now there is a strange thing, that I see that few new folders created/edited on the time 00:00. we didn't created it. it looks like some k8s/contect libraries directories maybe. don't know

So I suspect it's one of 2 things :

1. something related to snapshot etc.

2. maybe there is some system that this volume is mounted to it, and it's doing some changed in 00:00. but I can't see it from the UI logs

I do saw some similar topic here :https://community.netapp.com/t5/Ask-The-Experts/Files-disappear-from-NetApp-2220-every-day-at-00-00/td-p/153164

So I'm already showing here the command that the supporter asked there.

** editing -

I see both on May 22, and May 30, the following error on the "event log show"

5/30/2024 00:03:58 ntn01-netapp01-b ERROR disk.dynamicqual.fail.parse: Device qualification information file (/etc/qual_devices) is invalid. The following error, " Unsupported File version detected.

Part Number: xxx

Revision: A6

Serial Number: xxx

Controller Type: none

Status: ok

Chassis ID: xxx

Node: netapp-xxx

System ID: xxx

Model Name: AFF-A250

Part Number: xxx

Revision: A6

Serial Number: xxx

Controller Type: none

Status: ok

Chassis ID: xxx

2 entries were displayed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

But for ONTAP SELECT array, unable to get the data seeing the below error

-----------------------------------------------------------------

OnTapMulti::> system controller show -instance

Error: show failed: RPC: Program not registered [from mgwd on node "OnTapMulti-01" (VSID: -1) to nphm at 127.0.0.1]

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone pls help us to understand this

Is controller command support for ONTAP SELECT? or Do we need to do any configuration changes to get controller data for ONTAP SELECT? Could you please help us to understand this more ?

Setting Personal Shares to Read-Only

We use OnTap 9.x and all users have personal shares. We have a use case to make some of these personal share's read-only. Aside from actually setting the read-only attribute on the folders/files therine is there any method to mark a personal share as read-only at the Ontap side?

Deleting folders problem

Hi,

Netapp 9.11, CIFS and shared folder. Clients W10 from time to time unable to delete folders inside share. They can delete files inside but not folders.  It looks like W10 client sees folders as locked. We can delete (or change name) from another machine as a administrator. After random time W10 clients can do it too. ProcessManager sees these folders during deleting as attached screenshot. Any idea what's going on?

Volume Clone and Tamperproof Snapshots

$

Hi,

a few days ago i made a volume clon from a snapshot to restore a virtual machine.

After i finished the restore, i wasn't able to delete the volume, because the volume which i cloned got the same snapshot settings as the source volume. And the source has tamperproof snapthots enabled.

I had luck, the retention for the hourly snapshots is one day, so i disabled the scheduled snapshots and wait one day to delete the volume.

My question to think about: Is it useful to enable tamperproof snapshots on a volume clone per default when on the source enabed?

Kind regards

Stefan

Vol move questions

Have a couple of questions about vol moves.  Customer has roughly 34 volumes to move from an A200 to an new A250 in the cluster.   They would like to start baselining all of the volume moves with deferred cutovers.  The cutovers will be manually triggered during their maintenance window in a couple of weeks.

1) Does the vol move start with the "cutover-action wait" parameter just do a one time baseline of the data and then when you manually trigger the cutover it does an incremental copy of all changes since the baseline or does the job do some sort of incremental changes periodically between the baseline and the manual cutover?

2) It looks like there is a parameter on vol moves which restricts you to 8 concurrent vol moves.   It looks like we can increase that option.   Is it ok to bump it up for this customer to allow more than 8 vol moves to be sitting in a cutover deferred state? We would still not have more than 4-8 concurrent baselines going at one time but we would want to be able to have all 34 volumes in a cutover deferred state at the end of the process to prep for cutting them all over during the maintenance window and avoid having to baseline the larger volumes during that window.

Thanks...

Dean

ARW false positives will not clear

Currently running Ontap 9.12.1P10 on FAS8700 and FAS 2750

We are running ARW.  I have a number of volumes which experienced false positives where the attack probability was low.  I ran the command to indicate a false positive and clear the alerts.  The volumes do not have any ARW snapshots from the alert's time period. When I run the command    "security anti-ransomware volume show" with the volume information it still shows a low level attack from the date that the false positive occurred.  At the time I ran the command to clear the alert, it appeared to be successful.    Does anyone know of a way to clear the alert.  Below is a screen shot

Fabric pool and SVM-DR

Good day guys,

i have OntapSelect ClusterA with connected fabricpool used for Tiering. This ClusterA needs to be migrated to the new OntapSelect ClusterB. I would like to use SVM-DR.

Do i need to download all the data from Tiering to the ClusterA before i start the migration from ClusterA to ClusterB or is there a way to move " tiering "  + data without data download from the tiering ?

For example like to connect ClusterB ( target NAS ) to the fabricpool using the same storage account, resource groups, same object name and start SVM-DR from ClusterA to ClusterB. Can it work ?

Thank you,

VicThor

How much latency does it affect the service?

sdI looked up other articles and found that it might be affected from 20 μs, is this the value corresponding to total latency? Or is read latency and write latency separate?

This is a nas configuration.

Trunk port and broadcast domain

Hi,

I’m having some confusion about how to configure broadcast domains. Our NetApp AFF-250 running ontap 9.14.1P5 is connected to 2 switches. The NetApp ports on the switches are configured as trunk ports. On the NetApp the we have several VLAN lifs configured on the e2a, e2b and e2c network interfaces. My question is: should the vlan lifs and physical ports of the 2 nodes all be in the same broadcast domain in order to have correct failover functionality when doing switch maintenance (ie. firmware upgrade) or do all vlan lifs be in their own broadcast domain?

Aggregate Consolidation

I have two aggregates that were previously created from one disk shelf and now I would like to consolidate the two aggregates into on. One of the aggregates is completely empty and I would like to destroy it but in the past I recall there being some issues around disk sharing and the aggregate vol0.
What is the best that to destroy the aggregate, vol0 for the aggregate, shuffle disk ownership around (if required) so that I can have a single aggregate?

thanks in advance

MAV rule modification

Hello,

Hope everything is fine!
We are receiving many email notification from admin@localhost for certain rule and want to stop this.
Hence would like to modify the rules. Do we have rule exception adding feature in MAV (Multi-admin-verify) so that we won't be receiving mail for specific command?

Mail subject line: Approval Request for [system node run -node cluster1-01 -command dummy]

Any help would be appreciated.

Expand aggregate & raid group

Hi Experts !

I need some info on what happens with ONTAP when you add more disks to an aggregate than the max allowed for the RAID group of that aggregate.

Basically:

  1. What does ONTAP do in this case? Does it automatically create a new RAID group for the extra disks, or is there another way it handles it?
  2. Are there any performance or redundancy impacts on the aggregate after adding more disks than the RAID group's limit?
  3. Are there any best practices or recommendations to avoid issues in this kind of situation?
  4. If anyone's been through this, can you share your experience and how you managed it?

Here's my specific scenario: I have an aggregate with one RAID group (rg0) of 25 disks (RAID_TEC) + 2 spare, and the Max RAID Size is 29. What happens if I add 28 more disks to this aggregate ? This is to increase the capacity of a FlexGroup

Thanks experts !!
